MAY 29th 2012 Expat Repatriation: How to Prepare Your Family To Return Home by Julia Simens
While many expatriates experience some culture shock when they first move abroad, repatriation, or moving back home, can be even more difficult. Many repatriating expats experience reverse culture shock on their re-entry to their home country, as they attempt to readjust to their previous way of life.
We often hear about culture shock but transition shock is something we seldom expect. Understanding repatriation is very important. Many people are not truly in their home country nor are they from their host country, and thus, it is too easy to fall through the cracks. This is why global nomads find it is 'hard' to go home.
This reverse culture shock can stressful and devastating if expat families do not prepare themselves as re-entry to their culture of origin or home country can be associated with a great deal of emotion.
